Oil Pastels: The Misunderstood Medium That Delights Our Students
There's a moment we see in nearly every term at The Seasons Art Class. A student picks up an oil pastel for the first time, perhaps a bit skeptically, and makes their first mark on paper. Within minutes, something shifts. Eyes light up. Shoulders relax. "I didn't know they could do that," they say, fingers already smudged with colour.
Oil pastels are rather like the middle child of the art materials family — often overlooked in favour of their more famous cousins. Watercolours get all the lyrical praise. Acrylics command respect with their versatility. Even drawing materials have a certain classical gravitas. But oil pastels? They're frequently dismissed as children's tools, which is rather like calling a Land Rover a toy car.
Why Oil Pastels Deserve Better
The misunderstanding likely stems from their approachability. Unlike oils, which require solvents and patience, or watercolours, which demand a certain amount of courage, oil pastels are ready the moment you pick them up. No brushes to clean, no water pots to knock over (we've all been there), no drying time. Just pure, immediate colour.
But this simplicity belies remarkable depth. In our 14-week courses here in East Croydon, we watch as students discover that oil pastels can be blended like butter, layered like oils, scratched into for texture, and even thinned with a touch of solvent for painterly effects. They're forgiving enough for absolute beginners yet sophisticated enough to captivate more experienced artists.
What Our Students Love
The tactile joy is what students mention most often. There's something deeply satisfying about the direct connection between hand and paper, the way colour glides and builds. No intermediary brush — just you and the pastel, having a conversation.
Our students also appreciate the speed. You can complete a piece in a single session, which feels gloriously achievable when you're fitting art around work and family. Yet there's enough subtlety available for those who want to spend weeks on a single landscape or still life.
And the colours! Oil pastels come in the most sumptuous ranges — from whisper-soft pastels to rich, saturated jewel tones. When our East Croydon studio catches the afternoon light, and fifteen students are working away with their pastels, the room practically hums with colour.
Finding Your Medium
Of course, oil pastels aren't for everyone, and that's perfectly fine. That's precisely why we teach Drawing, Oil Pastels, Watercolours, and Acrylics across our 14-week terms. Some students come knowing exactly which medium calls to them. Others use the term to experiment, trying each one until something clicks.
The lovely thing about our courses is that there's time to develop a proper relationship with your materials. Not just a quick dabble, but weeks to understand their personalities, their quirks, their possibilities. It's rather like getting to know a new friend — the good bits and the challenging bits, until you find your rhythm together.
Come and Get Your Hands Colourful
If you've been curious about oil pastels — or indeed any of our media — we'd love to welcome you to our East Croydon studio. Whether you're a complete beginner or returning to art after years away, there's something rather magical about discovering (or rediscovering) what these misunderstood little sticks of colour can do.
